Weft and Warp January 25, 2010

Weft and Warp, originally uploaded by picturethepromises.

Several days ago, my photo for the day was of the warp wrapped snugly and neatly on my loom. Since then I've threaded both the heddles and the reed. (Pics will come sometime in the future!) After a couple false starts today I was able to finally get started weaving. This is my starter, it's made of used flannel sheets dyed in the washer. I use one packet of dye and fill the washer with fabric or clothing. Dark dye gave my a nice country denim like blue. This rug turned out to be about 50 inches long.

I remember as a kid, going to grandmas after school. She would have me sewing strips together or clipping the excess for her. I didn't think much about what she had me doing then. She was keeping me busy. I don't think either of us realized how much she was teaching me, how much of the instructions and the hands on lessons were going to stay with me for nearly 40 years!

I still miss my grandma Ida, she loved Jesus and she loved me. She taught me more than weaving, she taught me about faith and faithfulness, about giving and honesty, she modeled a love for God's word and showed my by example what walking with Jesus looks like. She prayed for me (for everyone of her family members) and she's waiting for me. Wonder if she's got carpet rags in heaven, gold and silver threads I bet!

Blessings~

  1. Those are the things that last - the lessons we learn about creative things from our parents and grandparents and the faith lessons too. Beautiful!
